Seattle received a Montana-style dusting of snow over the weekend and now weather reports are saying by Wednesday we could have up to seven inches more! The hubs and I live in a walkable neighborhood and we took a stroll up to our favorite park to snap some photos of our winter wonderland. What's it like in your area?

We jumped off the ground by ourselves and our awesome photographer, Amanda Waltman, clicked away and kept yelling "do it again!" She is a steady handed shutterbug, thanks Amanda! P.S. Seattle's Outdoor Ice Rink

Get ready to lace up your ice skates, Seattle! The Southwest corner of Cal Anderson Park will play host to the park's first ever covered outdoor ice skating rink.

When: December 6 to December 24 (might extend into 2012)
Where: 1640 Nagle Pl. a top Cal Anderson Park's basketball court area.
Times: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily
Cost: $12 per hour for adults; $6 per hour for kids, 8 years old and under
(includes skate rental; no cash, credit cards only)

And Caffe Vita plans to serve hot coffee and toasty cocoa daily.

I know, the price seems steep, and if you bring your own skates it's the same price for admission, but I plan to skate! Who's with me? I'm so excited to live within walking distance of the ice rink. If you go be sure to support local businesses in the area. Skate on!

A New Polaroid Camera Shop

My Polaroid camera goes with me when I travel abroad (I snapped the photo above of the Eiffel Tower with my Polaroid camera). And it's not easy finding supplies for it unless you go online. But now Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood is getting a new instant camera shop by the founder of Love Cameras! It is suppose to open at the end of October. I. Can't. Wait.

Weekend Getaway: Seabrook

If you live in the Pacific Northwest and you haven't visited Seabrook you are missing out. Seabrook is a quaint beach town along Washington's Pacific Ocean coastline. The homes are built green. The beach town is only a two and a half hour drive from Seattle and three hours from Portland, OR. It's a wonderful place to visit, relax and meet new friends.

At Seabrook you can rent a home or cottage. Ride beach cruisers. Fly kites. Run on the beach. Hike on trails. Picnic. Play basketball, volleyball, badminton, pickle ball, bocce ball, horseshoes and more. You can watch outdoor movies and make smores in an outdoor fire pit. You can discover dramatic beach sunsets. Or go on an evening stroll and explore all the twinkle lights that adorn the quaint homes.

They now offer an indoor pool. The beach town has its own shops and grocery store and a revamped restaurant now called Mill 109. If you are in the market to buy a beach home my hubs can get you a free night stay at Seabrook and you can go on a tour of the town and see home plans.

Look What's New: MYHABIT

It was just a matter of time before Amazon.com joined the ranks of high-end, couture discount sites (think local Seattle company Zulily). Enter: MYHABIT. Just use your Amazon.com login and password to get started on their new site. It's a private fashion sale site that offers up to 60% off brands from high-end designers to boutiques.

While on the site I discovered Decades Denim (shown above). Offering a new twist on the blue jean. They are designed more like leggings in look, but a bit heavier in weight like a jean.

It will be interesting to see what else they sell as time goes by, each day new products are launched for women, men, kids and home by couture designers.

Base Camp: Seattle in Vogue

Vogue magazine recently called Seattle "sophisticated but disarmingly down-to-earth," in their "America the Beautiful" series. They also managed to make us look like campers.

I'm tired of magazines writing up reports from New York (obviously they haven't visited Seattle, or they'd have known we don't dress like that) and passing us off as a city still hooked on Nirvana and wrapped in plaid and sporting hunting hats. And if you are staying at the Four Seasons in Seattle, take it from a local, it does not take five minutes to walk to the Seattle Art Museum (SAM), unless you're dropping off at Fran's to buy some chocolates on the way. It's only 423 feet from the Four Seasons to SAM.

But maybe they thought you'd rather "hike" the long way in your camping gear.

Sneak Peek: A Photoshoot with @ArtofSubtlety

Chutes and Ladders isn't just a board game, it's this photographer's life. Amanda Waltman of Art of Subtlety Photography is the real deal. She climbs ladders, she shoots from up high, she fixes your hair, wipes mud off your shoes and even brings props to your shoot (she brought an adorable children's book from her childhood to use in the photos with me, the writer and editor, I brought a vintage book too and my beloved train kite). She snaps photos while simply telling you to kiss, to look serious, to smile then to laugh (laughing wasn't hard to do with her fun sense of humor). She drags her own lighting outdoors to make your face sparkle and she does it all with a giggle of delight.

My husband and I had the pleasure of teaming up with Amanda for a photo session in Seattle's Volunteer Park. She snapped a new headshot for my company. And afterward we took some fun candid photos with her artful eye and laser sharp aim. Her infectious and friendly personality helped us relax and let loose. We loved our shoot with her so much we plan to make it a yearly tradition. This was the year of the "fun photo" (which some of you will receive in Christmas cards later this year - top secret for now) and to our surprise she also snapped the sexist photo ever taken of us! Miss Amanda, dear friend, we'll see you in the park next year for another shoot!

If you haven't been to Sara Seumae's boutique: SPUN Collective on Seattle's Capitol Hill you are missing out on top local designs. The friendly owner offers her own line of eco-friendly clothing called SPUN. I own a couple of her designs and adore them (1 super comfy, 2 has pockets!).

She shares her boutique space with local designers including: Out of Line, Nico Paper Goods, Lekkerlife, Cameron Levin and Dotty Speck (loved and bought this round silver necklace).

Visit her store to chat with Sara, she is a fashionable, friendly and knowledgeable woman who is quick to highlight other people's designs before her own.

I was lucky enough to attend the recent indoor track UW Invitational where two female Olympic icons ran in separate events.

The 2008 10,000-meter Olympic bronze medalist, Shalane Flanagan ran the 1-mile race in 4:33.81 and placed second. In person she is petite and super cut from her crazy training schedule.

And the 2007 10,000-meter World Championship bronze medalist, Kara Goucher ran and won the 5000-meter (5K) race in 16:11.50. Goucher looked strong after just having a baby four months ago! And her cute baby boy, Colt was at the meet along with her husband, Adam Goucher. I got to congratulate Kara after her race.

Intiman's A Doctor in Spite of Himself: Beyond Hysterical

Intiman Theatre's A Doctor in Spite of Himself, is a new adaptation by Christopher Bayes and Steven Epp. It's a silly yet funny muddle of misunderstandings. This show will get you laughing!

After an argument a wife tries to get revenge on her husband. But the husband has other plans up his sleeve. Giving the old saying "in sickness and in health" a new definition. A satirical viewpoint on the medical profession unfolds in side splitting humor.

The show is the Seattle debut of Tony-nominated actor Daniel Breaker and is directed by Christopher Bayes.

Overheard before the show: Laughter just before the start when characters of the show came out in character to tell us to shut off our cellphones.

Overheard in the seats: Tons of laughter to references to the Pacific Northwest and nods to Broadway classics such as The Music Man. And several people saying they wanted to see the show again.

Favorite scene: Instead of saying "Mazel tov" after a wedding the faux Priest said "Hasselhoff!"

The Kingfish Cafe: Southern Food at its Best in Seattle

I don't know what took me so long to eat at the Kingfish Cafe. Southern food, Southern charm, Southern hospitality and photos of the owners relatives on the walls. The food is their biggest draw. Homemade hearty gumbo, crab and catfish cakes, smooth mac and cheese, buttermilk fried chicken, are you salivating yet? End your meal with one of their cakes, the red velvet is their most popular.

Our lovely server Myishia melted our hearts, we felt so welcome thanks to her. If you go make sure you snag a table in her section. And get there early as the place fills up and they don't take reservations.

Upon leaving the restaurant a couple blocks down the road a cyclist overheard me raving about how great the experience was and how amazing the food was and he turned to me and asked: "You talking about the Kingfish Cafe? Play. Shop. Eat. Winthrop, WA

This could be a one horse town. It sure has an old country western vibe. If a trip to Winthrop, WA in the Mazama Valley is in your future this list will help you discover how to play, shop and eat in a town with endless trails for biking, hiking and running. And watch out for what the locals call "speed bumps" or deer, they freeze in the middle of roads and will surprise you on bends.

Play
Sun Mountain is just a fifteen minute drive outside downtown Winthrop. The trails out there are a trail runner and mountain biker's dream. The Chickadee trailhead is the start of the hilly Run the Sun 5-mile and 10-mile trail race, raced on Sun Mountain each summer (I've done the 5-mile race before). The Yellowjacket, Rodeo and Sunnyside trails are the flatest areas for trail running.

Shop
Downtown Winthrop offers several boutique shops. My favorites are The French Quail (mostly women's clothing and accessories, some men's apparel and shoes), Winthrop Mountain Sports (for your outdoor needs) and Trails End Bookstore (sells new and used books).

Eat
Hands down the best atmosphere to eat at near Winthrop is just eight miles out of town at the Twisp River Pub (they brew their own beer). And make sure you try the melt-in-your-mouth cinnamon rolls at The Valley Hub.

Fly a kite, have a picnic or beach comb for seashells at Cresent Beach Reserve. Go for a hike or drive up Mount Constitution for panoramic mountain views. Or rent a scooter or a bike and zip through the quaint, slow paced island.

Shop
Darvill's Bookstore, with its picturesque backdrop of glistening water, is a reader's gem.

Olga's features Anthropologie-inspired clothing, jewelry and home decor.

Tres Fabu! offers clothing and accessories with a French twist.

Nest is a flower and garden decor store with beautiful glasswares and more.

72 Hours in the San Juan Islands

Ferry Boat Horror Stories
If you plan to use the Washington State ferry system to get to any of the San Juan Islands it is important to know that according to island locals the holidays seem to attract ferry breakdowns. If you plan to go be prepared for delayed and broken ferry boats especially during holiday weekends.

And be sure to plan your trip around a ferry schedule that offers a second run within a couple hours (even if you are walking on versus driving). Because if a ferry breaks down you will have a shorter wait for the next boat. If there is a four hour delay between boats don't set yourself up for a long wait by taking the boat just before a four hour delay. Island locals told stories of busy holiday weekends having six to eight hour waits between boats due to breakdowns with no more runs scheduled for four hours or more! Our walk on trip involved a broken boat mid-morning and the next sailing was not until mid-afternoon. We waited six hours to walk on a boat at the terminal before one arrived. And the cars waiting to get on were in worse shape than those of us walking on the boat. In fact, almost every boat that day was late arriving to the terminal.

Unfortunately, according to island locals, the state provides the San Juan Islands with the poorest boats and several locals mentioned their embarrassment of this. Finally, the state does not supply enough runs during busy holiday weekends so keep that in mind.

Note: It's not a budget issue causing delayed boats and breakdowns in the San Juan Islands. Since they pay their employees triple time (upwards of $140 an hour!) it is their own fault for mis-managment of salaries. Can you say "foul on the play?" Washington State ferries in the San Juan Islands need to get back on track.

I've lived in Seattle over 20 years from bustling Belltown to relaxed Redmond to trendy Capitol Hill. I am the former About.com Guide to Seattle where I reviewed local travel destinations, Broadway shows, restaurants and more. And I've worked for major local names here including Eddie Bauer Corporate, Martingale and Co, AOL City's Best, Northwest Runner magazine. I currently freelance write and edit for several Seattle-area clients through my own freelance company.

I've also been a runner for 30 years (trail and road), a rock climber for 15 years and a lifelong hiker, cyclist and tennis player. And in my free time you'll find me flying kites, exploring the latest boutiques in the area and discovering the best places to shoot nature photography.

If you like to fly kites the best place to go set your sail in the air is Gasworks Park. If you love to hike don't miss Mount Si, Little Si, Tiger Mountain, Rattlesnake Ridge and Mount Pilchuck. If you love to trail run my favorite place to run trails near downtown Seattle is Discovery Park in the Magnolia neighborhood. If you like architecture Seattle offers several walking tours. Speaking of tours there are Underground tours and ghost tours and food tours. Or find a huge list of things I recommend to our home exchange guests for where to play. Find local Seattle festivals by season. And explore more Seattle attractions (including day trips, museums, theatres, parks and more).

My favorite local stores in Seattle include: Velouria, Blackbird and Horseshoe. I also adore Pretty Parlor. And SPUN Collective. I love visiting local "cycle boutique" Hub and Bespoke. Eat
I love the Volunteer Park Cafe (my husband and I walk there from our home every couple weeks to have breakfast). It's a cozy cafe tucked away in our local neighborhood. I also recommend Spinasse for its intimate feel and melt in your mouth cuisine (reservations recommended). The Melrose Market is my go-to local eatery for daily needs and for dinner check out Sitka and Spruce tucked in the corner inside the market (be sure to make a reservation before you go though, it's very popular). And if you like Southern food don't miss the Kingfish Cafe. And the best farmers' market in the Seattle area (and in America for that matter) is in Ballard. Want more? Boutique Crushes: In Seattle's Ballard Neighborhood

Is Ballard the new Soho? Ballard has sure changed! I recently ventured down there with my husband to do some shopping and what used to be a street full of bars and outdoor stores is now full of chic, trendy boutique shops reminiscent of Soho New York.

My husband enjoyed browsing the racks at Blackbird. And even bought a pair of shorts.

I fell in love with Horseshoe. And plan to go back soon.

We both decided that when we start a family we will shop at Clover for its eco-friendly kids' items.

Dolce Vita has a romper I wanted to buy, but it just wasn't the right color for me. Still on the hunt to find a romper for this summer.

Re-soul was a beautiful boutique with Anthro-esque shoes.

And Velouria in Ballard is just as fun and chic as the one located on Capitol Hill.

If you go make sure to stop and have tea and a cookie or even a crepe at Miro Tea. Snag a spot by the window and people watch while you sip and eat.

Lessons from a Kitchen Remodel Plus Photos

We recently remodeled the kitchen in our second property and it's finally complete! It was a long six week project and it started with the RE Store in Seattle salvaging the thirty-year-old kitchen cabinets and appliances. Then we had our new appliances delivered, ordered custom cabinetry and picked out subway tile for the backsplash. The following are the top ten things learned from a small kitchen remodel:

1. Plumbing will almost always have to be moved. Which means you can show the plumber the plans and the plumbing will still not be in the right place. Prompting another visit by the plumber.

2. Electrical sockets will have to be raised or lowered and then you have to think about if the plugs will be vertical or horizontal. And again you can show the electrician plans and they will still be in the wrong place. Prompting another visit by the electrician.

3. When installing tile how much space do you want between the tiles for grout? Sizes in inches: 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, etc. If using white tile add a new dimension with gray grout instead of white grout. It makes the white tiles three dimensional instead of one dimensional. Also be sure the tile setter uses an extra amount of mastic behind the tile if you plan to drill into the tile for hanging shelves, otherwise the tile will crack during drilling. The best method is to use thin-set tile mortar behind the tile you plan to drill.

4. If you are going to have a cabinet above your fridge choose a deep cabinet for more storage.

5. Make sure there is at least a 1/4-inch of plywood underneath the dishwasher to keep it level with the floor.

6. Have the electrician install the wiring for under cabinet lights. It adds richness to a kitchen and it's cheap to have done.

7. Finish cabinets with crown moulding for a complete and professional look.

8. In small kitchens add built-ins like wine cubbies, display shelves and open stainless shelving. Add a wall rack for spices and a wall rack for air drying dishes. Throw in a magnetic strip for hanging knives too.

9. For more counter space choose an undermount sink.

10. Keep in mind the remodel will cost double what you think it will.
